So what’s the difference and why are they both important.
Body positivity is a movement in which people are embracing and celebrating all bodies regardless of size. Someone who is body positive might be someone who loves their body and all that comes with that. Rolls, hip dips, stretch marks and cellulite. Positive affirmations may sound like “I love my stretch marks” or “I love my apron belly.”
Then there’s body neutrality. Body neutrality is less that you need to love every part of yourself and more about not hating it and accepting it. This might look like someone who has recently found peace with their stomach so their wearing the two piece even though their body doesn’t fit society’s ideal. Positive affirmations may look less like “I love the way my thighs look” and more like “I love that my legs allow me to go on such beautiful adventures.”
Both can be true at the same time. Maybe you love your stretch marks and belly but you feel more neutral about your arms. If body positivity seems like something that’s so out of reach, make a goal to start being body neutral. Instead of starting with “I love my belly!” start with “I appreciate my belly because it carried my baby.” You can always work your way up to body positivity because the more you learn to accept your body, the easier body positivity becomes. Both take unlearning though. We were raised in a diet and thin obsessed culture. You were taught that your body was “bad” and needed to change to be worthy. Start by following people with bodies that look like you and encourage body positivity or neutrality it’s a game changer to curate your feed.
Both body positivity and neutrality are so important because not only does it encourage body confidence but it fights back against toxic beauty standards.
